Overview Highly effective powder mixture to increase alkalinity ("buffer"). Helps increase pH stability in the aquarium by increasing alkalinity; further dosing increases the pH up to a value of 8.3, then the pH remains unchanged and the alkalinity increases independently. It is the source of carbonates, which make up a large part of aragonite, a mineral secreted by reef-forming organisms as skeletal material. A composition created by marine scientists. Before dosing, determine the alkalinity in the aquarium with an accurate test kit. Do not add this product directly to the aquarium without first diluting it in water according to the instructions. Technical background Magnesium plays an important role in the reef aquarium: it helps maintain the concentration of calcium and carbonate (which makes up most of the measurable alkalinity) by limiting their unwanted inorganic precipitation with each other. In the case of missing magnesium ions, calcium and carbonate ions bind quickly; thus, their concentration in the system fluctuates and a false impression is created that it is necessary to restore the required concentrations by supplementation. Regardless of the amount of calcium added, its concentration in natural seawater of 412 ppm can never be reached until the magnesium concentration approaches 1,290 ppm. Once calcium and magnesium balance has been established, further calcium supplementation produces immediate positive results. Maintaining magnesium in the range of 1290-1320 ppm will ensure the desired balance, and provide enough material for the reef-forming organisms to form aragonite (~0.10% mg by weight). Directions and Directions Basic: Dissolve 2.5 grams (~1 teaspoon) of product per 20 US gallons (75.7 L) of aquarium water in an 8-fl. respectively (237 mL) of fresh water; add every other day or as needed to maintain magnesium concentration between 1,290 - 1,320 ppm. When used according to these directions, 1,200 g will treat up to 9,600 US gallons (36,340 L). Advanced: Make a solution by dissolving 20 grams (~4 teaspoons) of Magnesion-P in an 8-fl. respectively (237 mL) fresh water (preferably purified); each mL of solution increases the concentration of magnesium (“[Mg2+]”) in 1 US gallon (3.785 L) of water by 6.0 ppm. [Reference: Each g of Magnesion-P will increase the [Mg2+] in 1 US gallon (3.785 L) of water by 114.4 ppm.] If the initial [Mg2+] in the aquarium is below 1288 ppm, add the prepared solution at a maximum rate of 10 mL per 20 US gallons (75.7 L) per day until desired [Mg2+] is reached, then continue with daily or weekly dosing as needed (see below). Keep [Mg2+] within +/-10 ppm. Once the desired [Mg2+] is reached, measure the aquarium's [Mg2+] at the same time every day for one to two weeks to determine the daily rate of magnesium consumption (ie, magnesium decline). To find out the daily dosage (preferable to weekly dosage): estimate the water in the whole aquarium system (US gal. (l)); divide the daily decrease in [Mg2+] by 6.0; multiply this number by the amount of water in the system to get the daily dose of solution in ml needed to keep [Mg2+] stable. Warning: Keep out of reach of children. Not intended for food. Guaranteed composition Magnesium (min) 43% (430,000 ppm) Composition Magnesium sulfate (anhydrous), magnesium chloride (anhydrous)
